Laura Giacalone awarded European trip; numerous winners in History Day competition

National History Day projects in Mrs. Procell’s and Mrs. Soileau’s classes advanced to the state competition held on Saturday, April 11, at the National WWII Museum in New Orleans. The following students are to go to the national competition held at the University of Maryland, College Park in June:

Seniors Miriam Trafford and Brittney Maples, 1st place, The Spanish Armada of 1588.
Junior Destinee Smith, 2nd place, Civil rights leader Ella Baker.
Seniors Laura Giacalone and Amber Fuhrmann, 2nd place, Ray Kroc: McDonald’s Entrepreneur.
Junior Ethan Dennis, 1st place, Edwin Booth.
Junior Anjuni Singh, 2nd place, Confederate female soldiers during the Civil War,
Senior Laura Giacalone won a full scholarship to the National WWII Museum’s Normandy Academy, an 11-day immersive study of the D-Day invasion. Laura will join 31 other high school juniors and seniors from across the country studying the decisions and strategies of the Normandy invasion. She will travel to Paris and battle sites in Normandy including Omaha and Utah Beaches, Brecourt Manor, etc., following the footsteps of the Easy Company featured in Band of Brothers. Laura will get to meet paratrooper veterans and members of the French Resistance while there.
