Sophomore Debaters Lawrence & Kiihnl Place 9th in the Nation

Congratulations to Eleanora Lawrence and Austin Kiihnl for placing 9th overall in the nation for Policy Debate at the National Speech and Debate Tournament held in Dallas, Texas June 16-21st.  The sophomore duo earned the opportunity to represent the State of Louisiana due to their performance during the regular debate season.  An alternate team is also allowed to participate from Louisiana, and that team was also made up of Caddo Magnet High School students Dain Ross and Palmer Miley.

From the National Speech and Debate Association:  “With more than 8,000 students, coaches, educators, and parents from across the country attending the tournament each year, the National Speech & Debate Tournament is the largest academic competition in the world. More than 150,000 students are members of the National Speech & Debate Association, and only 3% qualify to compete at the national tournament. The national champions make up less than 1% of all speech and debate competitors.”

Caddo Magnet Debate Coach Kasi McCartney also received the Diamond Key Award while at the tournament!  This award is given to coaches that help students achieve over 15,000 points which is the equivalent of 2,500 debate round wins.  And thank you to Class of 2018 Caddo Magnet grad Nathan Jagot for helping coach the team to success.
