September 27 was named Justin Atchison Day by Shreveport Mayor Adrian Perkins, in honor of Dr Atchison’s work on the recent NASA DART mission.

As you might have seen in the news, NASA’s DART (Double Asteroid Redirection Test) mission was completed on Monday, testing kinetic impact to “nudge” an asteroid off course.

Justin Atchison graduated from Caddo Magnet High in 2001 and worked as a mission design lead on the DART project. He works for the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Lab.
