  • The Magnet Dance Team won the first-ever Magnet Athletics Competition for the month of August! Congratulations dancers and coaches!
  • “All Juniors will take the ASVAB test on the morning of September 19th.   Junior students and teachers need to plan for students to miss 1st through 4th hour that day.  Students scoring a 59 or higher will be eligible for an additional cord at graduation, so please do your best.  Testing locations will be the PAC, C-8, and C-9.  Please see the testing locations list posted outside the library, front office, and cafeteria.”  
  • On Wednesday, September 18th volleyball is hosting a fundraiser at Dillas on Bert Kouns from 4 p.m. until 9 p.m. All you have to do is mention Caddo Magnet HS Volleyball or use the code SPIRIT if ordering online.
  • The cast list for Big Fish has been posted and is cram packed with amazing talent! Interviews for tech positions will be scheduled soon! Information will come out by email, the drama club band, and Instagram. 
  • Drama Club is hosting the first Broadway Breakfast on Friday in the Lecture Hall at 7:45. There is no charge if you’ve paid your drama club dues. For non-members, there is a requested $2 donation. Check the drama club band, club page, or Instagram for additional information and to rsvp!
  • There will be representatives from Rhodes University, University of Chicago, and the US Coast Guard available Wednesday during both lunch shifts.
  • A representative from Tulane will be on campus Thursday during both lunch shifts.
  • Forms for students interested in joining Student Council and returning members are available in E104 with Mrs. Williamson and B4 with Mrs. Pepitone. Forms will be due Friday, September 20th. 
  • The PSAT, which is the qualifying test for the National Merit Scholarship Program, will be given on October 2nd. The price for freshmen is $14 and for sophomores and juniors, it is $18. Go to payschoolscentral.org to register. Payment for the test is all you need to register. The absolute last day to register is next Friday, September 13th. Please see Mr. Bottoms, Mrs. Thompson, or Mrs. Dolph with any questions.
  • Yearbook picture day for underclassmen will be Wednesday, September 18 in the gym! Students are reminded to be in Magnet dress code. Information about picture ordering will be given to students on picture day.
  • All ladies interested in forming a girl’s lacrosse team for the spring season should meet after school today in E206 

 

  • Magnet Tennis is having a tennis merchandise fundraiser from now until September 30. Please go to Local Level Events and Search Magnet Tennis to purchase athletic tees, pullovers, and vinyl stickers. Show your Magnet spirit!

  • On October 3rd, the Hispanic Studies Association plans on hosting a festival that features the many beauties of Hispanic Culture with games, such as loteria, delicious food, such as tacos, refried beans, rice, and traditional dances. We would love it if you all would join in celebrating with us on October 3, 2024, after school from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Come enjoy one of Magnet’s many heritages.

  • The Library’s 1st Book Slice of the Year is Wednesday, September 18th on both lunch shifts. We will discuss the Louisiana Teen Reader’s Choice book “The Q” by Amy Tintera.  Sign up using the Google form in your Canvas “Class of” page.
  • The parent meeting for the Heritage trip to Atlanta, Selma, and Birmingham is Monday, September 23 @6 pm in the library.  See Mrs. Graham for more information.
  • September 23 – 27 is “Banned Books” or “Right to Read” week.  Banned Books Week brings national attention to the harms of censorship by highlighting efforts to remove or restrict access to books. It celebrates the freedom to read and the value of access to information, even when it’s unpopular or unorthodox.  Celebrate your 1st Amendment rights by participating in the following library activities.
    • Monday, September 23rd wear your SLAM, library, or favorite book t-shirt.
    • Tuesday, September 24th get caught reading and win a prize.  You never know who is watching.
    • Wednesday, September 25th we will play “Silent Library” games in the drama room.  
    • Thursday- September 26th Banned Book Movie Night 5:00 p.m. in your Magnet library.  Free to enter.  Concessions will be sold.
    • Friday- Donate a new or gently used Children’s book.  10 books= 1 hour of service.  1 hour limit.

9/9

On this day in history, 9/9, the Stono Slave Rebellion of 1739 occurred in South Carolina. 60 slaves killed about 20 white people before being killed or later executed. It was the largest slave uprising in British mainland colonies before the American Revolution. it led to the passage of harsh Slave Laws in South Carolina, worsening conditions for enslaved people. Although not a direct challenge to state authority, it raised concerns about slave revolts and resulted in legislation aimed at controlling slaves and preventing insurrection

On this day in history, 9/10, Rock band Nirvana released their single “Smells Like Teen Spirit”, often dubbed the anthem of Generation X. “Smells Like Teen Spirit” set the foundation for Nirvana’s overall success and provided unity for young people who needed an outlet. With its success, record companies turned grunge into one of the most profitable and best-selling rock sub-genres.

On this day in history, 9/11, al Qaeda terrorists aboard three hijacked passenger planes carried out coordinated suicide attacks against the World Trade Center in New York City and the Pentagon in Washington, D.C., killing everyone on board the planes and nearly 3,000 people on the ground. A fourth plane crashed into a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania, killing all on board, after passengers and crew attempted to wrest control from the hijackers. The events of 9/11 not only reshaped the global response to terrorism, but raised new and troubling questions about security, privacy, and treatment of prisoners. It reshaped US immigration policies and led to a surge in discrimination, racial profiling, and hate crimes.

On this day in history, 9/12, Johnny Cash died in Nashville, Tennessee, at the age of 71 from complications related to diabetes. Known as the “Man in Black,” Cash was one of the most successful artists of the 20th century. He released iconic hits like “I Walk the Line,” and  “Ring of Fire”. Johnny Cash was one of the most influential musicians of the 20th century, known for his music that touched on themes of sorrow, moral tribulation, and redemption

On this day in history, 9/13, Michelangelo begins work on his statue of David, a masterpiece of Renaissance sculpture. It embodies the aesthetics of High Renaissance art, the politics of Renaissance Florence, and the technical virtuosity of Greek sculpture. It has become one of the most recognized works of Renaissance sculpture, symbolizing strength and youthful human beauty.
