This Day in History:
March 7th
On this day in history, March 7, 1965, Alabama state troopers attacked 600 unarmed protestors on the Edmund Pettus Bridge. The protestors had been marching from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama, in order to protest the murder of a young, unarmed African-American man and the continued disenfranchisement of African-Americans in the South. Footage of this event, which would come to be known as “Bloody Sunday,” shocked the nation and emboldened the protests against racial injustice and discrimination. This prompted the government to move, and five months after “Bloody Sunday,” Congress passed the Voting Rights Act, which was enacted in order to remove discriminatory, race-based restrictions, such as literacy tests, to voting.
