The Mary Jane Malone Lecture Series will feature renowned spoken word poet Sarah Kay, says teacher Leslye Gilchrist. Sarah will speak to Magnet students at 1 pm on December 1, 2015, the Tuesday after Thanksgiving Break. Afternoon classes (4th-7th) will be shortened.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Sarah Kay\u00a0(1988) is an American poet, says Wikipedia. Known for her spoken word<\/a> poetry, Kay is the founder and co-director of Project V.O.I.C.E., founded in 2004, a group dedicated to using spoken word as an educational and inspirational tool.[1]<\/a>[2]<\/a>[3]<\/a>[4]<\/a><\/p>\n

Kay, a graduate of Brown University<\/a>, was born in New York City<\/a>, New York to a Japanese American<\/a> mother and a Jewish American<\/a> father.[5]<\/a> Sarah Kay now currently writes, reads, and performs poetry for all different kinds of audiences. She began performing poetry at the Bowery Poetry Club<\/a> in the East Village<\/a> at the age of 14, joining their Slam Team in 2006.[6]<\/a> That year, she was the youngest person competing in the National Poetry Slam<\/a> in Austin, Texas.<\/p>\n

In 2007 Kay made her television debut, performing the poem “Hands” on HBO<\/a>‘s Def Poetry<\/a> Jam.[7]<\/a> She has performed at events and venues like the Lincoln Center<\/a>, the Tribeca Film Festival<\/a>, and at the United Nations<\/a> where she was a featured performer for the launch of the 2004 World Youth Report.[8]<\/a>[9]<\/a><\/div>\n
