There are two orchestras in the CMHS Orchestra Program. The Chamber Orchestra consists of the top performers, while the String Orchestra is the training group. Students enrolling in Orchestra class must have a minimum 4 years of experience playing his/her chosen stringed instrument. The class fee is $125.
Louisiana All-State Orchestra auditions are held in September. Caddo Magnet High consistently has more string students in All-State Orchestra than other high school in the state. All-State Orchestra rehearses and performs for the Louisiana Music Educators Convention in Baton Rouge, Louisiana the weekend before Thanksgiving. Sophomores, Juniors and Seniors with a grade point average of 3.5 or higher are eligible to apply for an Academic All-State award.
Chamber Orchestra students have the opportunity to audition in October for the prestigious Concerto Competition. Both Orchestras join the Magnet Concert and Jazz Bands and the Magnet Choirs to perform jointly for school events such as National Honor Society Inductions, Talent Shows, Plays, Concerts, Graduation and many other special occasions.
The Orchestra classes are combined to perform for the LMEA District Eight Large Ensemble Orchestra Assessment Festival in late February/early March. Orchestra students have the option to participate in the Caddo Parish Honor Orchestra. This group performs during Art Break in late April.
