The Mary Jane Malone English Scholarship, established in 2016, is a $1,000 Scholarship to be awarded to a Senior at Magnet High. It has been established in honor of Mary Jane Malone (Class of 1994), who was a member of the Student Government Association, Debate, and National Honor Society. She was also head cheerleader and Homecoming Queen. Mary Jane desired to teach English and to write after graduating from college, but passed away at a very young age. Through the generosity of her parents Farrell and Martha Malone, who have established this scholarship, her love for Magnet and her interest in literature and writing remain in our thoughts.
The scholarship will be awarded to a student who is an active member of campus life and who has demonstrated a persistent passion for English Language Arts through his or her coursework and writing. Other factors taken into account are a love of reading and career plans which may include a major in an English related field. Teachers, parents, or students may nominate a candidate; students may also nominate themselves.
The winner of the scholarship will be selected by the Malone family from a slate of finalists. Two of the finalists are eligible for smaller awards.
Last year’s winner was Sadie McGuire. Finalists were Avery DeGering and Elizabeth Hart.
Deadline for submissions for the 2018 scholarship is Wednesday, December 13th.
